Abstract

"Terrorism is a form of political violence with a long and complicated history - a history that sheds a much needed light on contemporary manifestations of the phenomenon. The History of Terrorism: The Four Waves and Its Predecessors is a major contribution to our understanding of the roots of contemporary terrorism. Rapoport provides an analytical framework of the "four waves" to reconceptualize the last hundred years of global terrorism. He argues that the idea of terrorism as a global phenomenon can trace its roots back to rebel action in Russia and France after the example of the French Revolution (the first wave), followed by a global wave anti-colonial terrorism that began in Ireland in the 1920s (second wave), far left resistance from Europe to the global south (third wave) and then, finally, our current moment of anti-secular movements primarily in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa (four wave). Each of these waves had different characteristics, from the weaponry each favors to their preferred tactics, targets, and goals. After outlining each of these waves and their main actors in depth, Rapoport concludes the book by exploring what may be next for a fifth wave--right-wing, anti-migration populists-- and how we will be able to understand, study, and combat this new threat better by understanding the past"--

Abstract

Abstract

"Contemporary lone-actor terrorism is a complex, multi-dimensional process, involving different contexts, ideologies, geographic regions, circumstances, drives, individuals, and modes of violence. Despite the complexity behind a violent incident, the outcome unfortunately is quite simple - harm and devastation to victims, families, and society. The purpose of this book is to explore lone-actor terrorism from different but complementary vantage points. One important focus is on the variability of clinical and forensic mental health concerns. In addition, this book explores other aspects of lone-actor terrorism, including law enforcement and homeland security, risk and threat assessment, geography, ethical considerations, and legal issues. Lone-actor terrorism does not happen in a vacuum. In the context of a given set of conditions, stressors, and rhetoric, many people will think about acting in some form of opposition, vocalize their disagreement or outrage, protest, and vote, in order to effect change. A very small number of individuals, however, think they have to 'take matters in their own hands' and act violently in order to effect change"--

Abstract

The attacks of 9/11 kickstarted the development of a pervasive and durable transnational counter-terrorism order. This has evolved into a vast institutional architecture with direct effects on domestic law around the world and a number of impacts on everyday life that are often poorly understood. States found, fund and lead institutions inside and outside the United Nations that develop and consolidate transnational counter-terrorism through hard and soft law, strategies, capacity building and counter-terrorism 'products'. These institutions and laws underpin the expansion of counter-terrorism, so that new fields of activity get drawn into it, and others are securitised through their reframing as counter-terrorism and 'preventing and countering extremism'. Drawing on insights from law, international relations, political science and security studies, this book demonstrates the international, regional, national and personal impacts of this institutional and legal order. Fiona de Londras demonstrates that it is expansionary, rights-limiting and unaccountable.

Abstract

"Terrorism, Law and Policy: A Comparative Study is a textbook offering a comparative study of the terrorism related legislation, policy and practice introduced from international governmental bodies such as the UN and the European Union, and individual states, with a focus on Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US. It offers a uniquely legal perspective on key themes relating to terrorism and security. This new edition is brought fully up to date with the ever-changing developments in terrorist activity, as well as in states' approaches to anti-terrorism legislation and policy. It includes new chapters on the far-right and extreme far-right cause, one on offering a comparative study of the anti-terrorism policies of states and international bodies, and the role of international and national counter-terrorism agencies, planning and preparing acts of terrorism and a new chapter on freedom of expression, hate crime and proscribing groups as terrorist organisations. Terrorism, Law and Policy: A Comparative Study is ideally suited for terrorism and security modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and will also be of interest to practitioners working on the legal aspects of these areas"--
